Andrew Gardiner

What was your first ever job?
I’ve worked in a hat and glove wholesalers in Manchester and delivered eggs from a blue Morris Minor van, but my first proper job was working for a transport group in Bridgewater in Somerset, arranging deliveries of Bartlett Tinned Pears to supermarkets. We also had the contract for the nationwide delivery of J Cloths.

And your first deal?
My first property deal was on Church Street in Eccles. A chap had driven down from Sunderland, and I’d accidentally set the alarm off. Because he’d driven all the way just to see the building, we walked around while I shouted the details to him over the noise. He still signed.

What about your biggest deal?
In terms of size, the letting of the old Arena7 cinema at the Manchester Arena, to It was for 106,000 sq ft and I had to convince the arena owners to convert the cinema, as well as persuading Zendor the work could actually be done. It was, and we ended up letting the whole lot.

And the one that got away?
Too many to mention, but not being able to let The Royals in Sharston on a long-term deal as a Holiday Inn in 2005 must rate as the most. disappointing. Particularly as it has remained largely empty ever since

Outside of property, what makes you happy?
Coaching rugby union at Wilmslow U15’s, keeping chickens, trees and useless facts.

Any heroes?
Anyone who doesn’t complain.
